A Letter From a Reader

The one dress I put on without thinking twice.

On the denim-and-print maxi that skims the middle, covers the tops of the arms, gets noticed for all the right reasons — and buttons up at the front, so there's no zip to wrestle with.

The Syma — denim on top, a skirt full of movement below.

I am 59 years old, and somewhere along the way getting dressed stopped being a pleasure. The comfortable things in my closet were shapeless and dull; the pretty things pinched, clung, or showed more arm than I wanted to show. So most mornings I settled for “fine.”

I didn't realise how much that wore on me until a friend from my book club turned up to lunch looking relaxed and elegant at the same time. When I asked where her dress was from, she smiled and told me to read the Wrenley family's letter before I bought anything.

The Wrenley Family runs a small boutique, family-owned since 1996. Their letter walks through the handful of things they refused to compromise on. I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.

1A cut that skims the middle — never clings

A cut that skims the middle — never clings

The waist of the Syma is gently gathered for a little shape, and from there the skirt falls away into a full, relaxed A-line. Not tight, not shapeless — it skims over the middle and moves with you, while the denim bodice keeps the top half neat and structured.

2No zip to fight with

No zip to fight with

There is no zip up the back. The Syma fastens with buttons down the front of the denim bodice — slip it on, do up the buttons and you're ready. No reaching behind your shoulders, no asking for help, and at the end of the day it comes off just as easily.

3Denim with a neat, considered finish

The bodice is made from medium-wash denim with a spread collar, a front button placket and short sleeves finished with rolled cuffs. The sleeves cover the tops of the arms, and the denim gives the dress a casual, put-together look that works from the kitchen to the garden to a lunch out.

4A print that gets noticed

A print that gets noticed

Below the denim, the full skirt carries a bold, layered print — in Green, an olive and yellow-green pattern with a textured, almost watercolour feel. Next to the plain denim it has just enough character to be noticed, without ever looking loud.

5It fits the woman — not the other way around

The Syma comes in sizes XS all the way to 3XL, with a relaxed cut and a full skirt that sits easily on the body. And because ordering a dress online always takes a little trust, you can return it within 30 days of delivery if the fit isn't right.

6A length you can forget about

The hem falls to mid-calf or ankle, so there's nothing to tug down when you sit and nothing to think about when you cross a room. Wear it with boots and a leather bag, or with sandals on warmer days — in Green, Leo, Blue, Khaki, Royal Blue or Ivory.

I do not usually write things like this. But I spent too many years settling for clothes that were merely fine — and this one dress quietly gave me back the pleasure of getting dressed. If that sounds like you, I hope you find your size before it's gone.
